OK GO

OK GO my new favorite band has created a new video "Last Leaf." I love this band and keep missing them when they tour near me but someday I will be in the crowd. Anyway OK GO is beyond creative with thier videos and I love to show these to my students in film club. The "Last Leaf" video is a great example of stop animation. Some of of film club members have been inspired by OK GO to create some really cool videos. I can't wait to see what happens when they see this one.
OK GO also posted that they used a Samsung NX100 iFn which has a pretty cool websited to go along with it. This DSLR camera has some really great features and with the ifunction lens makes it very easy to use. This is very helpful to a Mr. Riley who happens to be pricing out DSLR cameras at this very moment : )

Day 24

Day 24 of the 30 day cycle finds all students completing a test in Excel 2007.  I place a completed excel assignment on my website and have students recreate it.  My goal is to eventually have students apply and create an excel assignment based on data that I present.  For now though students complete the following assignments.  Grade 6  Grade 7  Grade 8
Grade 7 & 8 students will need to print the formulas as well as a finished assignment.

Dell 1720dn

In my classroom I have a Dell 1720dn printer.  The printer error light came on the other day and asked me to replace the printer drum which I did.  Once I replaced the drum I figured I was good to go, this was not the case.  The "replace printer cartridge" light and the "error" light were still blinking.  I looked up how to reset the printer and found that I should hold down the cancel button after I replaced the drum.  So I took the drum out and replaced it, then held down the cancel button and the replace printer cartridge button and the error light were still blinking.  I then found out that the imaging drum counter needed to be reset.  Here is how to do that:
  1. Open the front cover
  2. Hold down the cancel button
  3. The lights will "chase" each other
  4. Release the button
  5. Close the front cover
  6. Press the green arrow to print a "print settings" report
  7. On the report look for Cartridge information, Photoconductor should read OK
  8. Breath a sigh of relief and resume normal printing

Mahalo & page2rss

Checking out my statistics on Google Webmaster I noticed I that Mahalo linked to me.  I wondered who or what Mahalo is. From thier website "Mahalo is a human-powered search engine dedicated to help people easily find information and resources they can trust. Mahalo launched in public alpha in May of 2007, added the freelance-fueled Mahalo Greenhouse in June and graduated to public beta in October of that year. In December 2008, Mahalo introduced Mahalo Dollars through the addition of Mahalo Answers. The Greenhouse closed down after Mahalo introduced Mahalo Tasks and Page Management in June, 2009."  I liked it and found a lot of information that I found helpful.  I wish Mahalo well.
Page2rss has also linked to me & I need to admidt I don't understand why they did or really who they are.

Day 21 & 22

Over these 2 days students will work on an excel assignment individually.  I am looking to see how much information has been leaned and what can be recalled.  I allow students to work with a partner for assistance, however all students need to complete the assignment.
All classes begin with Mavis keyboarding practice then move into the assignment.  Grade 7 & 8 will complete the Good Luck Grams.  This is an assignment that I students must write in formulas, merge & center cells, use the autosum, and create 3 types of charts.
Grade 6 students also complete a Good Luck Grams assignment.  However this project contains elements already learned and concentrates on basic entry and formatting of cells and creating different type of charts.

Film Club

We are currently in the fourth year of Film Club.  This club has continued to exceed expectations in student participation and projects entered.  Students are challenged to create a short 15 second film which will showcase our sixth, seventh and eighth grade students' storytelling ability using a video camera and film-editing software.  We discuss the entire film making process from concept to finished movie.  Students write their scripts, use story boards to sketch out filming, and edit their films using movie maker. The catch is that the students will only get 15 seconds to tell their story. Participants will have to think critically about their scripts, camera work, and editing.  Festival Highlights will include student speeches, awards for various categories and "Red Carpet" arrival.

The objective of the club is to unite the visual arts with technology & foster an environment where students learn that they have a voice and can tell their own stories using one of the most powerful mediums in our society.  To bring the local community and school community together to celebrate and enjoy the creativity of our student.  To learn how to plan and create a script.  To learn how to use a Digital Camera/Digital Video Camera, Computer and the program Microsoft Movie Maker.

I do have students who would like to use advanced programs and software to create special effects in thier films.  I stumbled upon Freddiew's YouTube Page  today and love his FAQ's.  Here is someone who is making quality videos and instead of promoting softare he is encouraging film makers to create with what is available to them first.  I love it.  Thank you Freddie

Edublogs

I have been looking for a place to find new lesson ideas and exchange information with peers in other schools.  Unlike the business world it is very difficult for a teacher to interact with peers in different locations or districts.  That is one reason why I took to blogging.  My personal blog is still growing and I am still trying to perfect the style of my blog and what I would like to post.  This school year I began posting what specifically was covered in class every day for the first 2 cycles.  My goal was to link to lesson plans, ideas, and topics.  I wanted to create a view into my classroom.  With the third cycle approaching I am going to change my post topic and focus on another task.  As I look for new lesson plans I have also submitted my blog to the Edublogs list.  This appears to be a great resource of educational blogs that I will be adding to my reader in the very near future.  I am a little bummed that I am currently on page 12 however I hope to move up.

The Buzz Letter

In case you missed it, are curious, or just want to read it....

Google rarely contacts Gmail users via email, but we are making an exception to let you know that we've reached a settlement in a lawsuit regarding Google Buzz (http://buzz.google.com), a service we launched within Gmail in February of this year.
Shortly after its launch, we heard from a number of people who were concerned about privacy. In addition, we were sued by a group of Buzz users and recently reached a settlement in this case.
The settlement acknowledges that we quickly changed the service to address users' concerns. In addition, Google has committed $8.5 million to an independent fund, most of which will support organizations promoting privacy education and policy on the web. We will also do more to educate people about privacy controls specific to Buzz. The more people know about privacy online, the better their online experience will be.
Just to be clear, this is not a settlement in which people who use Gmail can file to receive compensation. Everyone in the U.S. who uses Gmail is included in the settlement, unless you personally decide to opt out before December 6, 2010. The Court will consider final approval of the agreement on January 31, 2011. This email is a summary of the settlement, and more detailed information and instructions approved by the court, including instructions about how to opt out, object, or comment, are available at http://www.BuzzClassAction.com.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
This mandatory announcement was sent to all Gmail users in the United States as part of a legal settlement and was authorized by the United States District Court for the Northern District of California.

Day 9

Day 9 did not start out as planned.  Our system was unavailable during first period and we experienced a blackout during 3rd.  The blackout lasted 30 seconds but did add a bit of excitement to our day.  Grade 7 students were split.  Period 1 students worked independently because of the unavailable service.  The 6 period students completed work on reformat me.  They were a bit behind period 1 because of a field trip.  8th grade students completed the stylize assignment and reviewed bibliography's.  The stylize project was designed to be a simple and easy project to learn how to incorporate Styles to your document.  Grade 6 finished up the Schedule assignment.

Using Google Docs to Create Forms

I created a video that will show you how to create and read data collected in a Google Doc's form. This is a fantastically easy way to survey people and collect data in real time. You can also use these same techniques to create a quiz or test. you can check out the video here.

Day 8

All grades begin with Mavis Beacon typing practice.
Grade 7 & 8 complete the Reformat Me assignment.  This assignment is designed as a list of instructions that students follow in order to take a "messed up" documnet and make it look like my sample.  I use this lesson to disuss the "Home" tab and the formating features of Word.  We review how to add a Drop Cap & How to add and remove Text & Paragraph Borders.I also use this assignment to discuss how to create a bibliography in Word and how to enter references.  This can be a confusing assignemt for students and Grade 7 students will take a day and a half to complete. This is review for Grade 8 students so I allow them to work with a partmner and see how much they recall form last year.
Grade 6 students begin the Schedule assignment.  This assignment is meant to introduce students how to create and edit a table, review how to format a picture, how to add a footer, and introduces how to add and format Word Art and Banners.
